ICOM General Meeting
Museums and Universal Heritage
August 19th to 24th, 2007
Vienna, Austria
The role of museums within society is changing fundamentally and rapidly. Being increasingly exposed to numerical and economic criteria, museums risk losing their main focus on collections. But collections still remain (at) the core basis for knowledge, competence, social integration and value of museums. The ICOM-General Conference 2007 intends to be a forum to discuss and generate ideas and solutions to bridge the gap between these different expectations.
ICR Annual Conference 2006
Museums and a Sense of Place
30th August – 4th September 2006
Reykjavik / Iceland
How to reflect uniqueness of your region? What is so special about your place and how does your museum communicate its identity to visitors and to the community? The local and regional communities are aware that attraction building relies on the uniqness of the place. Museums should help communities define themselves and specific atttributes shaped by geographical characteristics, language and common experience can be used to improve the visibilty of the town or region. Thus they contribute not only to the local economy but also to people’s self-confidence.
